Newsletter November 2019

This is the 137th issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in November 2019 as well as short reports about events, presentations, etc. in Oktober 2019.

New to Konstanz

We welcome to our department Dr. Cory Bill who has joined the project of Todor Koev "Parenthetical Meaning". Cory is an experimentally-minded linguist with interests in semantics/pragmatics and language acquisition. His website is here.

Events at/by the Department

in November

• James Harland (Research Fellow, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen) will be giving a talk on The Archaeology of the aduentus saxonum: Rethinking Ethnicity in Britain during the so-called “Migration Age”, on November 12th, 10:00-11.30, in D 432.
   
• On November 21st-22nd, the Department of Linguistics will host a workshop on Non-canonical questions in French, German, and beyond, organized by Andreas Trotzke and Anna Czypionka; more information can be found here.
   
• Haiping Long, Sun Yat-sen University of China / University of Düsseldorf, will present a talk entitled Formation of a Modern Chinese clause-taking conjecturing huaiyi predicate: A parenthetical perspective and a conjoining account. It will take place on Thursday, 28th November, 10:00-11:30, in D 404.

• Jane Lutken from Johns Hopkins University gave a talk on October 7th on children’s acquisition of questions: Errors as evidence: What children’s syntactic errors can tell us about how they learn grammar.
   
• In co-operation with the NWO network Searching for Semantic Universals in the Modal Domain, our RU "Questions at the Interfaces" held a workshop with a day of open talks on October 9th, 2019. See here.

• Andreas Trotzke & Eva Wittenberg will give a talk on Mogst a weng a Schnitzala? A psycholinguistic approach to modality in the Bavarian nominal domain at the 14. Bayerisch-österreichische Dialektologentagung (BÖDT)/University of Salzburg, November 7th-9th.
   
• Ryan Bochnak will be giving a talk Towards a semantics of graded futures in Washo at the Forschungskolloquium in Linguistik at the University of Stuttgart on November 12th, and then again as an invited plenary speaker at the workshop Processing Tense at the University of Tübingen on November 15th.
   
• Erlinde Meertens and Izabela Jordanoska will give an invited talk titled Macedonian li: Opening a window into multiple layers of focus marking at the Workshop Relatives, Interrogatives, Alternatives in Prague, November 13th-15h.
   
• Georg A. Kaiser is giving a talk on Information structure and subject-verb inversion in Italian and Spanish ‘why’-interrogatives (joint paper with Svenja Schmid and Klaus von Heusinger) at the Workshop on Topic and Clausal Architecture at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Florianópolis, Brazil, on 14th November 2019.
   
• George Walkden will be in Vienna to give a talk at the Wiener Sprachgesellschaft on 21st November with the title Complexity as L2-difficulty: sociohistorically responsive features in syntactic change.
   
• Farhat Jabeen will be presenting a poster in the workshop titled "Recursivity in Phonology: Below and above the word" in Barcelona on November 21st-22nd. The title of her poster is Recursive Intonational Phrases in Urdu/Hindi.

Following linguists of our department gave talks:

• George Walkden on Detecting syntactic change and stability at the Workshop on Statistics in Historical Corpus Linguistics, Maynooth, Ireland, on 5th October 2019.

• Georg A. Kaiser at the XXXVI. Romanistentag in Kassel on Estabilidad y variación en las oraciones interrogativas de las lenguas románicas (’Stability and variation in Romance interrogatives’) (joint work with Katharina Kaiser and Aikaterini-Lida Kalouli).
   
• Bettina Braun and Katharina Zahner on early language acquisition at the Volkshochschule in Tuttlingen on October 9th. The talk was entitled Sprechen lernen beginnt mit dem Zuhören - Ein Einblick in die frühkindliche Spracherwerbsforschung rund um das Wörter lernen.
   
• Andreas Trotzke gave an invited talk on Discourse particles in second language acquisition at the Autonomous University of Barcelona on October 11th.
   
• Tina Bögel at NELS 50 on October 26th, with the title Rhythmic phrasing of prosodic words: a diachronic perspective from Old English, supported by experimental evidence from German.

Travelling

Following an invitation by Prof. Haiping Long, Nicole Dehé will be in China from 15 October to 5 November. She has been invited to attend the Conference on Chinese Grammaticalization to be hold at China Three Gorges University in Yichang, 25-27 October 2019. In addition, she will give a variety of talks at the following universities: Capital Normal University (Beijing), Three Gorges University (Yichang), Zhejiang University (Hangzhou), Shanghai Jiaotong University (Shanghai), Changshu Institue of Technology (Changshu, Suzhou).

Andreas Trotzke has been invited to visit the University of California, San Diego, from October 27th to November 2nd to collaborate with the Language Comprehension Lab (head: Prof. Eva Wittenberg).

We call your attention to Hannah Booth’s blog on her research visit as part of the SFB-TRR 161 and collaborating with Christin Schätzle.

We are very happy for George Walkden, who has been awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Grant by the European Research Council, worth €1.5 million over five years, to work on language contact and syntactic change cross-linguistically. You can find out more about the project, which will be launching in April 2020, here.
