This is the 149th issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in November 2020 as well as short reports about events, presentations, etc. in October 2020.

New to Konstanz

We welcome Anamaria Bentea to the department. Anamaria will be joining the Romance and Multilingualism teams as of November 2020.

Anna Gupta will soon start (November or December) her PhD work in the project entitled Complexity in Derivational Morphology: Theory and Experimental Evidence. The project is part of the collaborative funding opportunity of the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) where 19 projects across all disciplines were awarded (UK PI Aditi Lahiri; German PI Carsten Eulitz).

Events at/by the Department

The Lecture series The Multilingual Mind: lecture series on multilingualism across disciplines will start on 3rd November 2020 and will run this year online via Zoom on Tuesday from 17.00-18.30. The speakers will present research findings on multilingualism across different disciplines, in line with the MultiMind project (linguistics, education, psychology, neuroscience, speech & language pathology). The lecture series is aimed at everyone interessted in Multilingualism. The dates, list of presentations, and Zoom link can be found here.

• Anamaria Bentea is presenting an online talk entitled Number mismatch and intervention in the absence of lexical restriction:  An investigation of 'celui/celle’-headed relative clauses in French (joint work with Stephanie Durrleman) at the Boston University Conference on Language Development (BUCLD 45), November 5th-8th.
   
• Nicole Dehé is invited speaker at the Workshop on Non-canonical Questions at the Syntax-Prosody Interface, 12th-13th November 2020. Paris, France. The workshop will be held online. The title of Nicole‘s talk is Prosodic and syntactic cues to rhetorical meaning and the talk is based on joint work done in FOR 2111, P6.
   
• Anika Lloyd-Smith will be giving an invited talk on Accent in heritage bilingualism for the Cyprus Acquisition Team (CAT) at the University of Cyprus on November 13th.
   
• Eva Csipak and Regine Eckardt will present at the Japanese conference on Language Engineering and Natural Language Semantics (LENLS), to take place online between November 15th – 17th, 2020.The title of their talk is The explicted addressee: A (mainly) pragmatic account of Japanese ka-questions.
   
• Regine Eckardt will present at the Workshop Investigating the Common Ground, to take place at Tübingen / online on November 20th, 2020.
  The title of her talk is Innovative compounds as probes of common ground: How BILD uses compounding to enrich the CG. The talk reports joint work with Qi Yu (Konstanz).
   
• Alexandra Rehn and Hannah Booth will be presenting a paper on the history of the possessive linking construction in Germanic (dem Vater sein Haus) at the (digital) Saarbrücken Roundtable of Dialect Syntax on the 20th November. More details can be found here.
   
• On 20th November Josef Bayer will take part in the SaRDiS (Saarbrücker Runder Tisch für Dialektsyntax) as invited speaker with a talk titled The reduction of denn to -n and some of its consequences.
   
• On 21st November, Nicole Dehé is presenting joint work on the prosody of rhetorical questions within the prosody series of the ICU Linguistics colloquium hosted by Seunghun J. Lee.
   
• Josef Bayer will give a talk as invited speaker on What are Discourse Particles? A Syntactic Account at The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad (Indien), 27th November 2020.

• On 8th October, Regine Eckardt and George Walkden presented a joint work on Unembedded whether-questions as pedagogical questions in Old English at the International Workshop on Discourse Particles hosted by the University of the Basque Country.
   
• Bernhard Brehmer took part as an invited expert in a panel discussion on promoting the acquisition of neighbouring languages in the Polish-German border area on October, 21st. The panel discussion was part of the opening event of the Days of Polish-German Cooperation in Szczecin (Poland). • Benazir Mumtaz, Tina Bögel, and Miriam Butt presented a paper on Lexical stress in Urdu"at Interspeech 2020 (online talk).
   
• Anika Lloyd-Smith presented an online talk entitled Phonological and syntactic CLI: The same but different at the Second Language Research Forum (SLRF 2020) at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (23.-25. October).

More News

• The DAAD funded project German-Greek toolkit for Theory of Mind and Language in Autism (MiLA) with Theo Marinis as the PI from Germany and Arhonto Terzi as the PI from Greece started in September 2020. This project aims to strengthen academic relations between two Universities in Germany (Konstanz and Cologne) and two Universities in Greece (Patras and Thessaly) through cross-discipline knowledge exchange in the disciplines of linguistics, speech and language pathology, and medicine. The consortium will develop together protocols in German and Greek to assess the language abilities and Theory of Mind (ToM)  of individuals with Autism. These tools will be used to conduct research in the two countries. The consortium will embed young academics  in both countries into an international environment and provide knowledge transfer activities  that can improve their training and qualifications  and can enhance their employability  within and outside the academia.
   
• An interview given by Katharina Zahner on language acquisition has been published in the MDR Podcast-series Meine Challenge. The Podcast is available here and the accompanying article here.
   
• The 2-day workshop on Social Security, Financial Planning and Co, targeted to PhD students and post-docs and organised by the Mittelbau, took place on the 23rd and the 30th of October and was a great success. Mrs. Carmen Vajda of the University’s Social Security Service was more than keen to share her expertise, advise and experience. On behalf of all participants, we thank her for the time and energy she invested in this very successful workshop!
   
• Theo Marinis gave the talk Bilingual children’s acquisition of complex syntax: comparing relative clauses in the heritage (Turkish) vs. the majority (English) language at the Workshop in honor of Cornelia Hamann, Oldenburg, September 2020.
   
• Congratulations to Katharina Zahner who gave an interview about the BabySpeechLab’s research on infant-directed speech for the magazine wireltern.ch. The recently published article is available here.
   
• We announce that there will be a workshop on Mental Health, Resilience and Personal Ressources targeted to PhD student and post-docs in the department of linguistics, organised by the Mittelbau and funded by the FOR2111. Date: December 8th - 9th, 9-12 am.
