Department

Linguistics is the science of language, of the human language faculty and its manifestations in particular languages and in actual use. Linguistics is, hence, one of the cognitive sciences.

In German universities, linguists are usually scattered throughout various language and literature departments. Following an internationally widespread model, the University of Konstanz has a separate Department of Linguistics, where linguists can join their efforts. The department provides research and teaching in general, language-specific, applied and experimental linguistics. Department members specialize in English, German, Romance, and Slavic linguistics, computational linguistics, multilingualism, and neurolinguistics, as well as phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics
