Newsletter November 2022

This is the 173rd issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in November 2022 as well as short reports about events, presentations, etc. in October 2022.

New to Konstanz

Our own home-grown Laura Hund (gradated in French and Political Science) has received a 3-year scholarship by the Klaus Murmann der Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft to pursue a PhD project on the incidental acquisition of French phonology through audiovisual media. If you want to congratulate her personally, you can find Laura in the “Romanisten”-corridor in G127. She will start her PhD in December. We are very happy to have you with us, Laura!

In November

• Anamaria Bentea (with Ur Shlonsky and Stephanie Durrleman) will present a poster entitled Towards a hierarchy of featural mismatch effects in the acquisition of A’-dependencies: A comprehension study with French children at BUCLD 47, taking place in Boston from 3rd to 6th November.
   
• Regine Eckardt will be presenting as a plenary speaker at the Conference Formal Diachronic Semantics (FoDS 7) at Budapest on November 10/11. For more information see here.
   
• Angelika Golegos, Maria Andreou, Dafni-Vaia Bagioka, Franziska Baumeister, Anna Czypionka, Eleni Peristeri, Vasileia Skrimpa, Arhonto Terzi & Theodoros Marinis will present a poster titled Ein neuer Test zur Untersuchung der Theorie des Geistes fur Kinder mit eingeschrankten sprachlichen Fahigkeiten - Daten aus einer binationalen Studie in Deutschland und Griechenland at the Interdisziplinäre Tagung über Sprachentwicklungsstörungen (ISES 12) - in Marburg, Germany, 25th - 26th November.

In October

• David Diem and Owen Brown presented at the Saarbrücken Roundtable of Dialect Syntax (SaRDiS) on 4th-5th October. Owen’s talk was on Soziale Effekte auf die Variation in siebenbürgisch-sächsischen Verbclustern (social effects on variation in Transylvanian Saxon verb clusters), and David’s has the title Is all Alemannic VO?. There was also a keynote by Julia Bacskai-Atkari, who is now at the University of Amsterdam, on Die Kasushierarchie und Asymmetrien in Relativsätzen des Alemannischen (the case hierarchy and asymmetries in Alemannic relative clauses).
   
• Regine Eckardt presented at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Budapest on October 6th. The title of the talk was Rhetorical questions as justifications. More informations can be found here.
   
• Antje Strauß presented a poster entitled Tackling endogenous theta oscillations in primary auditory cortex at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language held from October 6th-8th in Philadelphia, US.
   
• Also Mariya Kharaman, Natalia Bekemeier (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) and Carsten Eulitz presented a poster On the sensitivity of bilinguals to German and Russian acoustic cues for stop consonants at the 14th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language (SNL) held in Philadelphia, USA from October 6th-8th, 2022.
   
• Andreas Trotzke and Laura Reimer gave a talk on Comprehending non-canonical and indirect speech acts in German at Linguistic Evidence 2022 (Université Paris Cité) on October 6th-8th.
   
• Malinka Pila was invited to give a talk titled Considerazioni linguistiche e letterarie sulle varietà slovene del Friuli: il caso del resiano at the University of Padova (Italy), where she presented her work on the linguistic features of the Resian micro-language and shared her expertise in the translation techniques and problems, when the target language is a minority language. The meeting took place on 12th October.
   
• On the 18th of October Eline Smit gave an invited lecture at the Centre for Music & Science at the University of Cambridge. This talk was about her prior PhD research on the perception of affect of unfamiliar music. Eline’s  research was also recently featured on a podcast.
   
• Maria Ferin, Miriam Geiss, Tanja Kupisch and Theo Marinis gave a talk with the title Rhetorical questions in heritage acquisition: optionality at the syntax-pragmatics interface the third conference on Heritage Language Syntax (HLS3), in Paris, October 20th-21st.
   
• Angelika Golegos, Lisa Hindelang, Anna Czypionka & Theo Marinis presented a poster titled Comprehension of pronouns in adult Italian and Greek L2 learners of German at the Bilingualism Matters Research Symposium 2022 in Edinburgh, 25th-26th October.

More News

• We were very pleased to be able to present a varied and interesting program of talks at the Workshop “Pertinacity Pertains” at Schloss Marbach from Sept. 29th to Sept. 30th.
  
  The workshop was held in honor of Aditi Lahiri (former member of our department, Leibniz prize winner, triple ERC grant holder, CBE, FBA, etc. etc.) and featured talks by an international set of participants, several of our current and past department members, our department’s Ehrendoktor Paul Kiparsky as well as our former “ständiger Gastprofessor” Carlos Gussenhoven and Aditi Lahiri herself!
  
  On Friday, we also took the opportunity to look back at when Aditi first hired Achim to be the technician for her newly established PhonLab and immediately got him to work on providing the department with internet and email (this was 1992!). We charted laughter and tears over many shared years together and, together with several former members of the department who had arrived for the occasion, toasted Achim’s last day of work with the department with sadness but also with many good wishes for the future!
   
• The project STARFISH, led by George Walkden, is featured this month in an article in EU Research magazine: “Speaking your language, and changing it too?”: https://issuu.com/euresearcher/docs/starfish_eur32_h_res
   
• George Walkden ran a workshop on Investigating language change using parsed corpora at Aarhus University on October 4th.
   
• K. Sarveswaran successfully completed his dissertation on A Deep Syntactic Parser for the Tamil Language this September at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Sarves spent some of his dissertation time at our department via DAAD funding and has been jointly supervised by Professor Gihan Dias and Miriam Butt. Congratulations to Sarves!
   
• Last year, Prof. Dr. Hanna Fischer initiated a professional network for female linguists.
  It's a registered association now, gathering linguists across philologies and different stages of careers (working in academia or not). Students are welcome, too!
  Together, transparency, mutual support and the cohesion of FLINTA* in linguistics are to be promoted where competition or intransparency make professional action and careers difficult.
