This is the 164th issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in February 2022 as well as short reports about events, presentations, etc. in January 2022.

New to Konstanz

Dr. Eline Smit is joining us in February. Eline came all the way from Australia where she did her PhD at MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development in Sydney and worked as a research officer running sensorimotor synchronisation and EEG labs of the music cognition and language groups. She will be working with Tamara Rathcke, researching at the interface between language, music and cognition from a cross-cultural perspective. Eline will be based in London and visit Konstanz regularly, to keep the links between the UK and Europe alive. A very warm welcome to the department, Eline!

Conferences, Workshops and Presentations

In February

  • Andreas Trotzke will give an invited talk on How to do things with German particles at the University of Tübingen on February 9th.
     
  • Qi Yu and Regine Eckardt will give a talk entitled Enigmatic Compounds as Triggers of Attitudinal Meaning at the workshop „Literal and figurative meanings of compounds“ co-located with the 44th Annual Conference of the German Linguistic Society (DGfS), February 23rd-25th, Tübingen/Online.
     
  • Antje Strauß and Lars Meyer organise a workshop at DGfS 2022 entitled "(Why) is Language (Not) Rhythmic?" (AG 14). The program can be found here. On February 23rd, Antje Strauß is going to give a talk on Testing prerequisites of neural entrainment and its functional limitations for speech processing within the workshop.

In January

  • Tamara Rathcke was invited to the Department of Health Science at the University of Lille, to talk about her interdisciplinary work on the role of rhythm in developmental dyslexia. The presentation took place on 13th January in Lille as part of the local research talk series.
     
  • Tamara Rathcke also gave a talk at the first interdisciplinary workshop on Phonology and Dyslexia on 26th January in San Sebastian, Spain. She discussed her recently published work Towards a comprehensive account of rhythm processing issues in developmental dyslexia, co-authored with Chia-Yuan Lin from the University of Huddersfield, UK.
     
  • Christiane Ulbrich, Nicole Dehé, Meike Rommel and Moritz Jakob presented a paper entitled On Faroese intonation: nuclear contours produced in Vestmanna (Streymoy) at the virtual conference “Fonologi i Norden (FiNo)” which took place in Aarhus, Denmark, January 13th-14th.
     
  • Maribel Romero gave an invited talk titled A unified semantic analysis of the Q-particle in Sinhala across interrogative types on 21.01.2022 in the Colloquium Series of the Linguistics Department at McGill University (Montreal).
     
  • Andreas Trotzke gave an invited talk on Rethinking exclamation speech acts in the SPAGAD lecture series at ZAS Berlin on January 28th, 2022. The lecture series was organized online.

  • Sarah Warchhold will be joining the department as a doctoral researcher in the DFG-funded research project Regional variability in the input and the development of word recognition in toddlers on March 1st.
