Over the last 40 years, the Linguistics Department has proven itself to be internationally competitive and is nationally as well as internationally highly esteemed. Since its founding, it has received substantial third-party funding and has worked on several joint research projects (including Sonderforschungsbereich 99 "Linguistik" 1974–1985, Forschergruppe "Theorie des Lexikons" 1986–1995, Sonderforschungsbereich 471 "Variation und Entwicklung im Lexikon" 1997–2008). On April 1, 2016, the research group "Questions at the Interfaces" was established.
