This is the 177th issue of the Newsletter published by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Konstanz. It covers informations about the plans of the members of the department in March 2023 as well as short reports about events, presentations, etc. in February 2023.

On February 3rd, from 8:20 am - 4:30 pm, Georg A. Kaiser organized in room E 402 a workshop entitled L’interrogation en français et son acquisition. The workshop was part of a master course Interrogation im Französischen in which invited speakers as well as students gave a lecture.

In March

• On March 16th-17th, Georg Kaiser is organizing together with Maia Duguine (CNRS-IKER UMR5478, Bayonne) a workshop V2, or not V2, that is the question: On verb plaement in interrogatives. Two members of our deparment, Josef Bayer and Svenja Schmid, will also participate in the workshop and give a presentation.

In February

• Tamara Rathcke was invited to give a talk at the University of Southern Demark in Sonderborg. On 16th February, she discussed her work on political charisma which is part of the ongoing collaborative project at the Konstanz Cluster of In_equality.

• Colin Davis and David Diem presented a poster titled Doubling, Focus, and Extraction from PP in Alemannic German  at the 48th Incontro di Grammatica Generativa in Florence on Friday 17th February.
   
• David Diem gave also a talk titled Alemannic verb doubling is the overt realization of a head movement chai' at the 48th Incontro di Grammatica Generativa in Florence on Friday 17th February.
   
• Colin Davis reports the following poster presentation for February 2023: Anti-locality explains the interaction of subjects and parasitic gaps. Incontro di Grammatica Generativa 48, University of Florence.
   
• Svenja Schmid and Georg A. Kaiser presented a talk entitled Un estudio cualitativo de textos paralelos sobre las interrogativas ‘por qué’ en las variedades del español peninsular (’A qualitative study of parallel texts on interrogatives with ‘why' in the varieties of peninsular Spanish’) at the XIII. Deutscher Hispanistentag, taking place in Graz from 22th to 27th February.
   
• Janina Reinhardt and Svenja Schmid presented a poster titled Corpara. Un corpus de paraliteratura para el aula de ELE at the XIII. Deutscher Hispanistentag in Graz from 22th to 27th February.

• Abstract submissions are now open for the Musical Minds: Exploring cognitive links between language and music two-day workshop held at the University of Konstanz on 27-28 July 2023. For details on the workshop and details on how to submit, please check out the website. Deadline for abstract is 14th April 2023. Please share this workshop with your colleagues and tag #musicalminds when you do!
   
• We are very excited to to hear that Katerina Kalouli will be awarded the Wilhelm von Humboldt Dissertation Prize at this year’s DGfS Conference for her Konstanz dissertation Hy-NLI: a Hybrid system for state-of-the-art Natural Language Inference. The prize will be shared with Maria Bardají i Farré, who wrote on Nominalization in Totoli and other western Austronesian languages.
   
• Christin Beck will join the DFG Center for Advanced Studies Words, Bones, Genes, Tools at the University of Tübingen for a four month fellowship from March-June 2023. During the fellowship, Christin will collaborate with Marisa Köllner, working on developing a new methodology for investigating lexical semantic change across language stages which combines the usage of contextualized language models and phylogenetic methodologies for cognate identification. • The LFG’22 Proceedings are now on-line via our new host, the KIM at the University of Konstanz. The proceedings are edited by Miriam Butt, Jamie Y. Findlay and Ida Toivonen and feature the following Konstanz contributions:

• The recently published paper Emotional responses in Papua New Guinea show negligible evidence for a universal effect of major versus minor music of Eline Adrianne Smit, Andrew J. Milne, Hannah S. Sarvasy, Roger T. Dean was selected as 2022 PLOS One highlight.
   
• In the current Winter Quarter of 2023, Todor Koev ("Parenthetical Meaning", Emmy Noether) will be on an exchange abroad at Stanford University, being hosted by Dr. Judith Degen.

• Anika Lloyd-Smith and Tanja Kupisch co-published a Policy Paper entitled Why Language Matters: Inequality perceptions among the Sámi in Sweden and Norway to mark International Mother Language Day, which took place this year on 21st February. You can read the paper here.
